Penn Relays Recap

Another year and another 2nd place. I’ve been on the second place team for the past 3 years, always losing out to the Kenyans. Penn Relays is a great place to get the season going. Running into friends and fellow competitors increases the excitement for the pending season on the circuit. I managed to split 1:48.43 (official Penn Relays Split) on my 800 leg with some blustery wind on the back stretch. I was out in 51.2 which is perhaps a little quick for me this time of the year. I was pleased with how relaxed I felt going out at that pace, but I certainly paid it back with 150 to go when I couldn’t find the extra gear I needed. All in all I was pleased considering I haven’t any 800 specific work and hadn’t been that deep with lactic acid all season. I think it was the perfect tune up for this weekend at Stanford.

After the race was over I decided to stay in Philadelphia for an extra night in order to eat at one of my favorite restaurants in the city, Lolita. After an early dinner my training partner/friend/confidante, his wife Kristen, and brother Ben decided to bowl a few frames just around the corner from our hotel. I included a picture of Sam trying to see how fast he could hurl the ball down the lane.

It is Penn Relays weekend again! This will be my 6th consecutive year racing at Penn and my 3rd on the USA vs. the World DMR. I will be on the 800 leg this year. I rarely get a chance to go out and just run a hard 800 so I am excited to see what I can do. Next weekend will be the real deal out at Stanford where there should be quite a barn burner in the 1500m. Training has been great, the weather even better and my garden is looking fresh! I’ll post a recap of the weekend and some pictures when I return. I have a train to catch in about an hour so I need to be on my way. Until then, enjoy a picture of the trail where I start almost all of my easy runs.
