fifteen-hundred meters as fast as you can

Future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades . . .

My season ended last weekend in New York at the Continental Airlines 5th Avenue Mile. I was 7th in 3:57 after making a hard move about 800m from the finish line. I was already slightly in the lead at that point and with the entirety of the last half of the race stretched out before me I made a slightly too aggressive move which I repaid at the finish when the race was broken open by Jon Rankin and Lachlan Chisholm. After a disappointing and stressful summer of racing it was good to end my season at 5th Avenue because it reminded me what it was like to have fun while racing and competing. This summer I was so consumed with racing and training and stressing out about my illness that I forgot that this is all supposed to be fun. I forgot how lucky I am to be doing this.

I am now taking a break from training for a few weeks and using this time prepare my mind and body for the upcoming year of training and racing. I have been waiting for this Olympic year my entire life and it is finally here. I am already anxious to get back to hard training but I also know that my body and mind need this time to recover and refocus for the next year. This time is important mentally because it has allowed me the time and measure to put 2007 behind me and turn my attention towards the future. I’m reminded of the Timbuk 3 song, “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades.”
